LS signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 8.75 x 10.75, August 26, 1848. Letter to Mr. E. W. Lincoln, marked “private,” at the top. In full: “I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your friendly communication of the 10th instant, and of the accompanying newspaper slips. In reply, I have to inform you that it is true that I was visited during the last winter by a Committee of gentlemen requesting me in behalf of the Legislature of Mississippi to visit that body during its Session; but I have to add, that I have no recollection of having made any such remarks to them touching the Wilmot Proviso, as those attributed to me in the Massachusetts Spy. In regard to its statements about my intemperance, etc etc I have simply to say that they are too frivolous and absurd to be noticed, and that I hope that my friends will not regard them. With my best wishes for yr. prosperity through life.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
