Perry attempts to use his influence to get appointments for his nephews in the new Zachary Taylor administration

ALS signed “Your affec Uncle, M. C. Perry,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7, April 7, 1849. Letter to his nephew, James DeWolf Perry. In part: “I duly recd your letter explaining your reasons for the course adopted by you with respect to your late application for an appointment when I was informed that you and Grant [his first cousin, Christopher Grant Perry, son of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry] were desirous of attaining any certain offices…matters of appointment to office were so arranged as to throw nearly the whole power into the hands of Congressional delegations and that the offices which you and Grant desired were already disposed of.” Accompanied by a retained edited final draft from James Perry to Matthew Perry, dated March 28, 1849, on the reverse of an 8 x 12.5 business balance sheet. In fine condition, with some minor paper loss along bottom edge of pages due to rodent damage. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
