Description

Bell seeks to “obtain a really artistic picture” of Helen Keller for publication

TLS, two pages, 8 x 9.75, Beinn Breagh, Nova Scotia letterhead, August 31, 1899. Letter to “Mrs. Carruth.” In part: “The editor of the Association Review is anxious to publish your photograph of Helen Keller as a special insert upon special paper. He thinks that the best way to obtain a really artistic picture of Helen, that the Review would be proud of, would be to have you superintend the preparation of it. He says ‘I should be glad of a note, or letter from Mrs. Carruth, herself for publication, giving something of the circumstances attending, or leading to, the taking of this picture of Helen…If Mrs. Carruth will have the half tone cut made, we can look after the printing’…Send to the States and have the photograph reproduced by the best people in the very best way, irrespective of cost…Have the bill of expenses sent to Mr. F. W. Booth, Editor of the Association Review, School for the Deaf, Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, Pa.” Intersecting folds and light scattered foxing, otherwise fine condition. Mrs. Carruth complied with the request, and her photo, along with a biography of Keller, was published in the first issue of The Association Review in October 1899, produced by the Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb. The article identifies Carruth as a close friend of Keller’s and “an amateur photographer” with “high artistic talent.” Accompanied by a printout of the article, which includes Carruth’s photo.
