Description

“I was a little discouraged at first by McCarthy’s attacks...this is the start of what may become a very dangerous campaign”

Controversial American journalist (1897–1969), remembered for his muckraking journalism and syndicated ‘Washington Merry-Go-Round’ newspaper column. TLS, one page, 7 x 10.5, personal letterhead, January 11, 1951. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “Although I was a little discouraged at first by McCarthy’s attacks, the many letters I received from persons such as you helped a great deal…I fear, however, that this is the start of what may become a very dangerous campaign to put off the air and banish from newspapers those who do not agree with certain reactionary, perhaps even fascist elements in this country. Having spent some time abroad, I have seen what has happened when certain powers begin gradual—almost imperceptible—drift toward dictatorship. I hope that I am wrong, but it could happen here.” An area of toning to the upper left and slight separation to lower mailing fold, otherwise fine condition. RR Auction COA.
