Description

“I never saw more than two or three good photographs of American elms”

ALS signed “O. W. Holmes,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 6, Boston, January 24, 1871. Letter regarding elm tree photography. In part: “I never saw more than two or three good photographs of American elms. The best is a large one of the ‘Johnston Elm’ about three miles from Providence, one of the finest trees as it was when I used to visit it…I have stereographs of the Batan elm before its present condition of decadence and one of the Washington elm, the last a fair specimen of the tree but neither of them equal to the great Johnston elm.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
