Robert Toombs

Confederate political leader, officer in the Civil War, and the Confedracy’s first secretary of state (1810–1885). ALS signed “R. Toombs,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, Washington, July 13, 1858. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “I am hoping to-morrow certainly by next morning for a letter by which I shall know whether or not I shall have to go to Macon.” Second integral page is professionally inlaid into a slightly larger off-white sheet. Soiling to vertical fold on the first page, and various brushes to ink, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned original carte-de-visite portrait. RR Auction COA.
