Boldly penned ALS as president, one page, 8 x 10, Washington, May 20, 1842. Letter to former Maryland Congressman John Barney. In part: “I have to return my thanks for your kind invitation to dinner during my proposed visit to the encampment. I am compell’d to forgo the pleasure which I should derive in partaking of your hospitality.” In very good condition, with tiny holes at intersections of folds and tape-repaired complete separation to upper horizontal fold, with some show-through of tape.
