Description

Rare portrait of the artist in his studio

American artist (1841–1920) who documented American life, best known for his portraits and work during the Civil War. Exceptional original 11.75 x 9.5 mounted albumen photo of Mosler in his studio while working on ‘Wedding Feast in Brittany,’ signed in the lower right in black ink, “Henry Mosler, 91.” Some chipping and rubbing to edges of mount and slight irregular adhesion to signature, otherwise fine condition. ‘Wedding Feast in Brittany,’ considered by many Mosler’s greatest work, was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1898 by a patron. A beautiful, scarce portrait of the artist while painting one of his most important works. RR Auction COA.
