Booker T. Washington

African-American leader (1856–1915) who authored Up from Slavery and founded the Tuskegee Institute to provide young black people with educational opportunities. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, April 6, 1912. Letter to Arthur L. Kimball. In part: “With a view of ending our school year without debt for operating expenses, I am making a speciall [sic] appeal for small gifts from persons directly connected with educational institutions and I am, therefore, writing to ask you to make a small donation.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), scattered creases and toning, and a couple small edge tears.
