English novelist and playwright, born Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863–1933). Although he was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels, he is remembered best for The Prisoner of Zenda. Two items: one original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait by Albert Deneulain of London, signed on the reverse in black ink, “Very truly yours, Anthony H. Hawkins, 1888”; and one ALS signed “Anthony H. Hawkins,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, December 3, 1894. In part: “As regards to the picture I have a dispute with Elliott & Fry. They took me gratuitously, but subsequently I bought more copies. They say copyright is theirs & the photos can be copied without their permission (to be had on a fee).” In overall fine condition, with a few erased pencil notations to the front of the letter.
