Description

Jefferson C. Davis

US Army officer in the Civil War (1828–1879). Although successful in a number of Civil War battles, he is best remembered for two attributes: the similarity of his name to that of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his murder of a superior officer during an argument in the Civil War. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by Gardner of Washington, D. C., signed below the image in black ink, “Jefr C. Davis, Bvt Maj Gen,” and signed again on the reverse, “Only a tolerable good likeness was taken in June 1865, Jef. C. Davis, Bvt Maj Gen, U. S. Army.” In fine condition, with a revenue stamp affixed to reverse. RR Auction COA.
