Stanton; President Johnson attempted to replace Stanton with Thomas without support of Congress, which was the reason behind his impeachment. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite bust portrait of Thomas in uniform by F. Gutekunst of Philadelphia, signed at the bottom in black ink, “L. Thomas, Bvt. Major General and Adjutant General, U. S.
