American politician (1835–1913) who served as ambassador to Spain in the days leading up to the Spanish–American War. Original 2.25 x 3.75 carte-de-visite bust portrait by S. J. Thompson of Albany, signed at the bottom of the image in black ink. In very good condition, with scattered surface spotting, a pencil notation to the bottom of the image, and an irregularly trimmed bottom edge. RR Auction COA.
