Description

One month after his retirement, Ruth complies with an autograph request

Vintage fountain pen signature, “Sincerely, Babe Ruth,” at the bottom of an admirer’s letter, one page, 8 x 10.75, Independence Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church letterhead, June 25, 1935. In part: “I am a high school girl of Kansas City. I am compiling biographical scrap books and autographs of famous personages of the world and desire your signature.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, toning to borders, four areas of toned adhesive remnants surrounding the signature, and a slight brush to the sentiment. After his long and storied career, Ruth returned to Boston—this time with the Braves—for his final season in 1935. Although he was still a relatively able hitter, his abilities had deteriorated immensely in the field and on the basepaths—three Braves pitchers threatened to not play if Ruth were in the lineup, as his defense was so poor. In a stunning display reminiscent of his early years, the Babe went 4-for-4 with three home runs at Forbes Field on May 25, and announced his retirement two days later. During the early days of his retirement, Ruth thoughtfully took some time to return this autograph to his fan in Kansas City. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
