American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Miles was wounded four times during the Civil War, receiving the Medal of Honor for his gallantry at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He played a leading role in nearly all of the army's campaigns against the American Indian tribes of the Great Plains. Ink signature, “Nelson A.
