Description

King Kalakaua

King of Hawaii, 1874–1891. In February, 1874 Kalakaua was elected to the vacant throne by a legislature that had been convened for the purpose. Kalakaua almost single-handedly restored many of the nearly extinct cultural traditions of the Hawaiian people. These included myths and legends, and the hula, which had been forbidden by the missionaries for over 70 years. Vintage ink signature, “Kalakaua,” on an off-white 2.75 x 1.75 card. In very good condition, with a horizontal separation passing through bottom portion of signature, a uniform shade of toning, and a few spots. Signature could be matted for presentation. RR Auction COA.
