Description

“It was taken after my father’s first election to the Presidency. If I should hazard a guess, it would be that it was taken at Springfield, Illinois, not far from January 1861”

Son of President Abraham Lincoln (1843–1926) who served as secretary of war in the Garfield and Arthur administrations. TLS signed “Robert T. Lincoln,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.75, Pullman Building, Chicago letterhead, December 9, 1907. Letter to F. H. Meserve of New York. In part: “I have unduly delayed acknowledging your letter…asking if I could give any information respecting a small photograph of my father. I have made some search in my own collection, and among my own books, and I do not come across any photograph like this…and I do not think I remember it. I can see nothing about it to identify its date, except that it was taken after my father’s first election to the Presidency. If I should hazard a guess, it would be that it was taken at Springfield, Illinois, not far from January 1861.” Intersecting folds, the vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature, and light scattered soiling, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
