Fabled queen of Louis XVI of France (1755–1793) whose public execution, along with that of her husband, was the most grisly, visible, and powerful symbol of the political aims of the French Revolution. Manuscript DS, in French, signed “payez, Marie Antoinette,” one page, 9 x 14.5, December 30, 1784. The Queen orders Randon de la Tour to pay 365 livres to the four Maitres Palefreniers of her household, for the last quarter of the year. Signed at the conclusion by Antoinette, also bearing Marie’s secretarial proxy signature by Beauregard. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a slight separation along central horizontal fold, scattered toning and soiling, a couple small holes and edge chips, and some pencil notations near top. Public discontent was growing at this time due to the Queen’s extravagant spending. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
