LS in French, signed “Lafayette,” one page, 7.25 x 8.75, October 5, 1829. Letter to Madame Randall in Paris. In full (translated): “I have received, Madame, a letter from my friend Mr. Colden, dated from New York 8 August; Here is what he tells me about your affairs: ‘Having completely abandoned practicing my profession of lawyer and since I am almost always out of town, I would not have been able to devote the appropriate attention to Mme Randall’s business. I have therefore turned it over to Mr. Charles Patterson’s care, and I put his name on the blank proxy that was given to me. He has both the skill and integrity. I am sure that Mme Randall can count on him to do all that is advisable in her interest. He will write to her for the first building, I think that he will be able to remit to her right away the interest owed on the three thousand dollars. Concerning the remainder, because of the bankruptcy of Mr. M. Ritchetes and the state in which the elder M. Randall left his properties, I fear that she has very little to expect but she will be more especially informed of all this by Mr. Patterson.” Intersecting folds, a uniform shade of mild toning, and scattered light foxing, otherwise fine condition.
