“The photograph that you sent me is so death-like in its appearance that I am unwilling to sign it”

One-armed Union general (1830–1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. ALS signed “O. O. Howard, Brig. Gen U.S.A.,” one page, 5 x 8, Headquarters Department of Columbia letterhead, April 14, 1876. In full: “The photograph that you sent me is so death-like in its appearance that I am unwilling to sign it…but send you another not so intellectual in its reflective features but more like the homely original.” Under his signature, Howard adds, “Late Maj. Gen. of Volunteers & e.” In fine condition, with scattered toning. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite. A touch of vanity from Howard as he served as commander of the Department of the Columbia. RR Auction COA.
