Eminent French author (1804–1876), born Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, better known by the masculine pen name she adopted early in her career. An early feminist, she also earned a footnote in musical history as the longtime romantic companion of pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin. ALS in French, signed “G. Sand,” one page, 5 x 8.25, embossed personal letterhead, Nohant, March 6, 1875. Letter to photographer Placide Verdot. In full: “I am delighted, Monsieur, with everything you have sent to me and will ask for a large printing of proofs from you. Must I place my request immediately to relieve you of the plates that you would not want to retain, or should I wait for the arrival of the pictures in order to make you a general list? My son is also very pleased with the marionettes. We all agree (as we implied before) to render full justice to your artistic feeling and to your competence.” Central vertical and horizontal folds, light overall toning, and some show-through from mounting remnants to reverse, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Sand’s hand to the photographer, Verdot of Chateauroux, and an unsigned original carte-de-visite portrait by Nadar. The photograph referenced in the letter is the last ever taken of Sand, who would die a year later. RR Auction COA.
