Influential English art critic and writer (1819–1900). ALS signed “J. Ruskin,” one page, 4.5 x 7, no date. Letter to John Henry le Keux, an artist who did the engravings for Ruskin’s Modern Paintings 1843–60. In part: “Make it as right and like as you possibly can—my blot was made over the failed and disproportionate drawing of a pupil—but keep to my scale…The steel must be small—make the vignette the real size of the photograph—mine is twice the size—or if you cannot get the detail in—one third more than the photograph size.” Affixed to a same-size sheet. Central vertical and horizontal folds, and some slight toning and soiling to the upper right, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned original carte-de-visite bust portrait of Ruskin, by Elliott & Fry of New York. RR Auction COA.
