Congressman, speaker of the house, and vice president under U. S. Grant (1823–1885). ALS, one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, South Bend, Indiana, November 1, 1873. Letter to Archibald Wilson. In part: “I have just received…the volume of your father’s poems you have sent me & which I shall read with interest. I have heard years ago of the bookstore & its many distinguished visitors; & thank you for the thoughtful kindness which impelled you to write me the letter which I wholly appreciate. I never fancied Sarony’s pictures of me, preferring Brady’s & others; but I am now glad that that sitting has been the means of bringing me your valued letter.” In fine condition, with mild soiling to lower left. Colfax had numerous sittings with Brady during his years in Congress, and this boldly-penned letter comes from just a few months after the end of his term as vice president. RR Auction COA.
