American political cartoonist and illustrator (1840–1902) best known for devising the donkey and elephant symbols of the Democratic and Republican parties and the familiar ‘American’ version of Santa Claus. LS signed “Th: Nast,” one page, 5.25 x 8, July 29, 1866. Letter to J. B. Halcott. In part: “Will you please get for me, photographs of Thurlow Weed and Horatio Seymour (cartes), I should like the most characteristic and the latest.” In a postscript Nast adds, “Please send me the prices also, and I send it by return of mail.” Some scattered light creases and wrinkles, several blocks of light toning, and mounting remnants to top edge, otherwise fine condition.
