Description

As his wife provides relief for devastating Fremont flooding, Hayes finds a moment to send a Sarony portrait

ALS signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 4.25 x 7.25, Fremont, Ohio, February 13, 1883. Letter to Mrs. George Hunt. In full: “Mrs. Hayes is still so busy with relief work for the sufferers by the flood last week that I venture to reply to your note of the 3d instant. I send you a favorite photo taken while we were in Washington by Sarony of New York. The enclosed is a copy made here.” Intersecting folds, a horizontal fold passing right above signature, an ink spot to text, and a bit of light soiling, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Hayes. Hayes described the 1883 flood in his diary: ‘No such flood was ever seen here before. The water filled the valley from bluff to bluff. It ran two to four feet the whole length of Water Street, and drove from their homes perhaps one to three hundred families. Men in skiffs were at work all day Sunday, rescuing people.’ RR Auction COA.
