Description

Sarony the philanthropist: “Allow me to present you my charcoal drawing of William Cullen Bryant & Peter Cooper”

ALS signed “Sarony,” one page, 4.5 x 7, January 1875. Letter to “Mrs. Hayes” [probably Lucy Webb Hayes]. In full: “Sympathising in the noble charity of ‘the Permanent Floating Hospital of St. John’s Guild’ to which you have so generously contributed your time and attention, allow me to present you my charcoal drawing of William Cullen Bryant & Peter Cooper—trusting the sale of which will materially aid the cause.” In fine condition, with a tiny tear to the lower border, slightly affecting the paraph, and mild toning to the borders. Accompanied by an original unsigned carte-de-visite of Sarony, by Sarony. Cooper and Bryant had been photographed by Sarony in 1870, so he would have had good images to work from in producing a charcoal drawing. A fantastic letter that closes with the well-known, bold signature seen on so many early American cabinet photos and cartes-de-visite. RR Auction COA.
