Description

Joseph E. Johnston

Confederate general (1807–1891) who, when Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, resigned his commission as a brigadier general in the regular army—the highest-ranking US officer to do so. Initially commissioned as a major general in the Virginia militia, he relieved ‘Stonewall’ Jackson’s command at Harper’s Ferry and organized the Army of the Shenandoah. ALS signed “J. E. Johnston,” two pages on two adjoining lightly-lined sheets, 5 x 8, Washington, D. C., November 24, 1885. Letter to U. S. Grant’s niece-in-law. In part: “The photograph you asked for to my great gratification, will accompany this in the mail, but in a separate envelope.” In fine condition, with a horizontal mailing fold passing through the signature. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, filled out in Johnston’s hand. RR Auction COA.
