Description

Remarkable portrait of Rodin

Seminal and highly lauded French sculptor (1840–1917) whose works, including the iconic ‘The Kiss’ and ‘The Thinker,’ earned him a place among the most influential artistic figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Exceptionally clear original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo by Moreau of Paris, ca. 1907, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Aug. Rodin.” Collector’s ink notations to reverse date the photo to 1907. Light scattered surface marks and impressions, trivial silvering to dark areas of the image, mild dings and creases to corner tips of mount, and a small pencil notation to bottom of reverse, otherwise fine condition. Notable works Rodin executed in the year of this portrait are ‘The Hand of God,’ ‘Madame X,’ and ‘Eternal Spring,’ all now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a bust of Joseph Pulitzer. It was also the year Rainer Maria Rilke wrote his essays on Rodin, which the sculptor called the supreme interpretations of his work. A superb portrait of Rodin as he neared the end of his career.
