The Continental Army officer and Washington confidant killed in the Siege of Yorktown

Officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and member of George Washington's inner circle (1747–1781), and highest ranking American officer killed during the Siege of Yorktown. Ink signature, “I am with the greatest Respect your Most Obedt & very Humble Servt, Alexd Scammell, AGl,” on an off-white 7.5 x 1.5 slip clipped from the conclusion of a letter to General Wayne. In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, a professionally repaired tear to the left side slightly affecting the sentiment, a couple of tiny pinholes, and some show-through from writing to reverse.
