Army physician (1838–1915) known as the ‘Father of American Bacteriology,’ who investigated the causes of malaria, pneumonia, and yellow fever. TLS signed “Geo. M. Sternberg,” one page, 10.5 x 7.75, stamped War Department, Surgeon General’s Office letterhead, March 10, 1896. Response to a question regarding payment of civilian physicians, typed on the reverse of the initial letter of inquiry. In part: “Blank forms No. 26, are enclosed on which accounts for medical services rendered to officers or enlisted men on duty, by civilian physicians, when the services of a medical officer of the Army cannot be obtained, should be prepared in duplicate. Such accounts may either be paid by the officer to whom the services are rendered, in which case he is entitled to reimbursements by the Government, or the account may be rendered in favor of the physician who rendered the services, to whom payment will then be made.” Scattered creases and toning, a few original ink stamps and notations, and some show-through from writing on opposing sides, otherwise fine condition.
