Description

Exceedingly rare handwritten letter of condolence by Europe’s longest-reigning king

Rare ALS in French, signed “Louis,” one page, 6.25 x 8.75, July 22, 1670. Letter to Duke François Annibal II d'Estrées on the death of his father, Marshal François Annibal d'Estrées, who Louis had made a duke in recognition of his war services. In full (translated): “My cousin, I have learnt from your letter the loss you have suffered of a father that was dear to you for all sorts of reasons. And although you are well aware of my interest in everything that touches your family, I have desired to tell by these lines written in my own hand how much I share your grief. I know what you lose but also what I do lose myself in one who has shown so much devotion to me until the end of his life. I wish you a consolation proportionate to your grief and pray God to protect you, my cousin.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, including two that lightly pass through the signature, light scattered foxing, toning, and soiling, and show-through and toning from adhesive remnants to the reverse. Annibal d’Estrees in 1624, under Maria of Medici, was given supreme command over the troops of France, Venice and Savoy, in the conquest of Veltlin. For this, he was given the title of Marshal of France in 1626. Louis is quite scarce in handwritten letters. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
