Description

Arthur witnesses a swearing-in

Partly-printed partial self-contained DS, signed “C. A. Arthur,” one page, 8.25 x 6, March 11, 1875. Arthur signs as a witness to the swearing in of William J. Robinson as a collector of customs. Robinson swears that he has “never borne arms against the United States since I have been a citizen thereof…voluntarily given no aid, countenance, counsel, or encouragement to persons engaged in armed hostility thereto…and…will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Affixed at the top to a slightly larger sheet. A central horizontal fold, and paper loss to lower corners and pencil notation to lower border, both of which could easily be matted out, otherwise fine condition. Arthur’s signature at the conclusion is extremely clean and bold. A nice document from his days as Collector of the Port of New York. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
