TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, dated August 14, 2002. Haise writes to students of the Hinkley Middle School in Hinkley, California. In part: “Writing requires some organization and study of one’s thoughts, whereas our spoken thoughts sometime do not communicate what we really mean. Haven’t some of you sometimes said things that you really didn’t mean? An expression that comes to mind when I commit such an error is ‘I put my mouth in gear before I let the clutch out on my brain.’…I wish you well through the school year and careers ahead. The Earth needs talented young people to grow up and work on some of the problems that my generation leaves behind.”; and a color satin-finish 8 x 10 ‘red-numbered’ NASA photo of Haise in his space suit, signed and inscribed in black felt tip, “To the students of Hinkley Middle School—Aim high and good luck on your futures! Fred Haise, Apollo 13 LMP, Enterprise CDR.” In fine condition, with staple hole to top corner of letter. Pre-certified Steve Zarelli and RR Auction COA.
