English aristocrat (1584–1656) who died in captivity after the English Civil War. DS, in Latin and English, signed “Chesterfield,” one page, 7.75 x 12, September 4, 1644. Legal document in which the Earl of Chesterfield is bound by two financial obligations. Both the debts and methods of payment are spelled out within the document. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered light toning and soiling, a few small pinholes of paper loss, paper loss to blank second integral page, and a couple of light pencil notations.
