Robert Anderson

Union general (1805–1871). Anderson command the three United States forts; Castle Pickney, Fort Moultrie, and Fort Sumter, in the face of South Carolina's imminent secession. Anderson refused a formal demand for his surrender and in the early morning hours of April 12, 1861, Fort Sumter was bombarded, and the Civil War began. Wet plate, albumen 2.25 x 4.25 carte-de-visite photo. Full standing view of Anderson wearing a double breasted frock coat with shoulder straps. His kepi with artillery insignia is clearly visible sitting on the studio column at his side. Nice period ink inscription on the front mount in another hand, “Maj. Robt. Anderson, born Soldiers Retreat, Ky., near Louisville, June 14, 1805.” No backmark. In fine condition, with a trivial impression towards the top left corner. RRAuction COA.
