Madeleine Carroll

English actress (1906–1987). A favorite of Alfred Hitchcock, she appeared in The 39 Steps and Secret Agent. She was also the first British actress to be offered a major American film contract, becoming a part of the illustrious Paramount Pictures roster. Five letters (four ALSs and one TLS) signed “Madeleine” or “Madeleine Carroll,” ranging in size from 4.5 x 3.5 to 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, and dated from April of 1936 through March of 1949. Each addressed to esteemed collector, Saul Goodman, in which Carroll sends thanks for birthday wishes, thanking him for a bottle of wine, which was most “significant because it arrived just after I had heard officially that my next picture was the be ‘The General Died at Dawn,’ directed by Lewis Milestone, and your….read, ‘May this be another milestone along your path…to success!’,” and in another, Carroll makes that she “is now in the middle of making ‘Zenda,’ which promises to be a very fine picture.” In overall fine condition. Each letter is accompanied by the original mailing envelope, three of which are addressed in Carroll’s hand, and a holiday greeting by Western Union. RRAuction COA.
