American military officer (1836–1881), who, as a general in the Civil War, earned the sobriquet “Kill-Cavalry” for his gung-ho disregard for the lives of the soldiers under his command. Following the Civil War he served as the American Minister to Chile in the Johnson and Grant administrations; after a decade long hiatus, he was reappointed to that post by Garfield but died shortly after arriving at the Chilean capital.
