TLS as president, one page, 6 x 8, The White House letterhead, January 26, 1953. Eisenhower writes to Walter Hoving of New York, in full: “I truly appreciate your letter and your over-generous comments regarding the Inauguration ceremonies. I am delighted, too, that you liked the Inaugural address.” Matted and framed with the original letter from Hoving to an overall size of 17.5 x 12.5. A horizontal crease, few light spots, and a strip of toning across the top edge from previous display, otherwise fine condition. The “over-generous comments” Eisenhower references are truly words of epic praise, as Hoving describes the Inauguration as an event that “set the tone which will go far to put America back on the road of democracy based on fundamental religious principles…your address…was, in my opinion, one of the greatest inaugural addresses in American history.” The recipient of this letter, Walter Hoving (1897–1989) was an accomplished business man, who, among his many achievements, took the famous jewelry store Tiffany’s from the brink of bankruptcy and transformed it into a flourishing company, increasing sales from $7 million to $100 million over the course of three decades.
