Description

“The trials of the ANDREW JACKSON are the first since the sad loss of the THRESHER. There went down with her many fine young men”

TLS signed “H. G. Rickover,” one page, 8 x 10.5, U.S.S. Andrew Jackson letterhead, May 6, 1963. Letter to Lawrence Spivak of Meet the Press. In part: “We have just completed the first sea trials of the USS ANDREW JACKSON…The trials of the ANDREW JACKSON are the first since the sad loss of the THRESHER. There went down with her many fine young men; fine husbands, fathers, sons—a cross section of the flower of American youth…As a reminder of man’s dependence on God I present to each submarine Captain as he completes his training in nuclear power a bronze plaque. On it is inscribed the prayer which has been used by Breton fishermen for hundreds of years: Oh God, Thy Sea Is So Great and My Boat Is So Small.” In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
