Description

Scarce check bearing a fine signature of the fourth president

Partly printed check, 7.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Madison, payable to Abraham Lands or bearer for $58.37, September 19, 1819. Three old glassine tape reinforcements on reverse, pencil mark to body, scattered light toning and foxing, and a central vertical fold, otherwise very good condition. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries partially printed checks were not yet commonly used, and checks of that era were usually entirely completed by hand, more closely resembling promissory notes. As such, partially printed examples of early presidents are significantly rarer than their manuscript counterparts. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
