Description

The Georgia Peach signs his impressive biography: “Highest lifetime batting average in baseball history; for 24 seasons, an amazing .367!…American League batting champion 12 times…first ballplayer elected to the Hall of Fame”

Typed manuscript, signed in green ink, “Ty Cobb 10/28/58,” one page, 8 x 10.5. The text from this manuscript was originally published in This Week magazine. Manuscript reads, in full: “TY COBB is more of a legend than a reality to most baseball fans of today. Of all the superlatives lavished by sports writers of two generations, perhaps the one Ty himself prefers is, ‘He played every one of his 3,033 games as if it was the seventh game of the World Series.’ Here are some of Cobb’s records. If you’re an old-time fan, you’ll remember them. If you’re a youngster, you won’t believe them! Highest lifetime batting average in baseball history; for 24 seasons, an amazing .367! Only player to make over 4,000 hits. Only seven players have made 3,000! Ty Cobb”

American League batting champion 12 times --- nine seasons in succession! Only player to bat over .400 three times. In the era of the ‘dead ball’ Cobb once (1911) scored 147 runs and batted in 144. He regularly went from first to third on a bunt, and more than once stole second, third and home in succession! Cobb was the first ballplayer elected to the Hall of Fame. At the dedication ceremony, in 1936, Larry Lajoie, great contemporary of Cobb’s, gave an autograph to an admirer, then pointed to Cobb and said, ‘Now, son, go over and get the champ!’ In very good condition, with creasing and toning, and a few edge tears. eighty-four-year-old Larry Lajoie died three months after 71-year-old Cobb signed this manuscript. Since the collector had typed Lajoie’s name, it is probable that he had planned to ask Lajoie to sign next to Cobb. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
