American politician and social activist (1884–1968) who was a six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. Two ANSs: one page on a 5.5 x 3.5 card, January 1, 1938. In a brief letter to “Art,” Thomas writes, in full: “A Happy New Year to you—if that be possible in a crazy world. Anyway, your card helped!”; and a quick ANS in pencil at the conclusion of a 8.5 x 11 TLS from Charles Wallis, Professor of English at Keuka College, in which the teacher asks Thomas what his favorite poem would be, to which Thomas replies, in full: “Alas—I’m very bad a [sic] favorites—food, books, music. Sorry. Hope you’ll have better luck generally.” In fine condition, with a tear to the top edge, affecting the address, and intersecting folds and light creasing to the letter. RRAuction COA.
