Armstrong orders the immediate formation of additional regiments

Confederate general (1835–1909), known for being the only Confederate general to fight on both sides during the Civil War. War-dated manuscript DS, one page, 8 x 12.5, February 19, 1862. Document headed “Special Order No. 57,” directing the recruitment of new regiments. In full: “Captain W. R. Bradfute, C.S.A., is hereby authorized to raise & organize for immediate service as many regiments of Infantry as may arm and offer their services.

II The subsistence & ord. officers at this post, will issue subsistence & ammunition on Captain Bradfute’s requisition.

III Capt J. J. Gaines, Lieut. Calhoun, Hart’s Battery & Lieut. McNally, Gaines Battery, will report to Captain Bradfute to assist the organization of the regiments.

IV Capt Hart will assume command of all the Artillery temporarily. By order of Genl. McCulloch.”

In good condition, with partial separations along intersecting folds, scattered toning, soiling, and dampstaining, paper loss to edges, and light overall creasing and wrinkling.
