Description

“I lost the game 3 to 2 in eleven innings. The pitcher for Baltimore was a tall left hander named Babe Ruth. That was his first year in organized baseball”

Pitcher for the New York Highlanders. TLS signed “George P. Shears,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Emissaries Attunement Center letterhead, October 28, 1967. Lengthy letter to an admirer. In part: “The first game I pitched at Jersey City was against Baltimore. I lost the game 3 to 2 in eleven innings. The pitcher for Baltimore was a tall left hander named Babe Ruth. That was his first year in organized baseball. You might be interested in hearing about the greatest play I ever saw. It was made by Hal Chase. There was a man on third base and they needed one run to win. Hal Chase seemingly had a nack of outthinking other players. He decided they would put on the squeeze play, so as soon as the pitcher started winding up Hal headed for home plate…Hal fielded the bunt right in front of home plate, touched the batter…and dove headfirst and touched the runner coming from third…A double play unassisted.” Under his signature, Shears adds, “age 77 going strong.” In fine condition, with scattered toning, intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a few ink corrections. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
