ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 7.75 x 10, May 19, 1840. Letter to Michael Sowers. In full: “Enclosed is a check for $40, being the amount of your pension due from the 3 March to the 3rd Sept 1839. That which has accrued since the 3rd Sept. 1839 it seems must be received in Philada [sic]. It is not convenient for me to attend to the receipt of that. Not being in the habit of receiving any compensation in such care, I charge you nothing.” Second integral page bears a hand-addressed and free franked panel in Clay’s hand to Sower, franked in the upper right, “Free H. Clay.” Cloth matted and framed with a portrait of Clay, to an overall size of 23 x 28.5.Intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, some light paper loss along folds (mostly to second page), and scattered toning and soiling, otherwise very good condition. Second panel also retains most of the black wax seal. Oversized. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
