Vellum DS as president, one page, 16 x 19.5, June 7, 1870. Grant appoints Howard M. Rundlett to the rank of Assistant Surgeon in the Navy. Signed at the conclusion by Grant, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy George Robeson. In very good condition, with central horizontal and vertical fold, scattered light creasing and rippling, some light soiling around the edges, and a small area of paper loss on the right edge. The blue seal is worn, but intact. Three years after this appointment, on May 25, 1873, Rundlett, having reportedly suffered from over-exposure to the sun, passed away while serving aboard the United States ship, Terror.
