US Army colonel (1796–1883) who served in the War of 1812, the Seminole War, and commanded the First Regiment of Dragoons in Texas. He led several campaigns against Native American forces, including the Seminoles, the Utes of the Rocky Mountains, and the Apache in New Mexico.
