A unique collection of 11 original pencil and ink sketches on a 10.5 x 7.25 off-white sheet removed from an artist’s sketchbook. A three-panel comic strip in ink across top titled “Mike’s toothache” picturing (1) Mike tying a string to a door knob which he has already attached to his aching tooth, (2) Mike seated on a stool calmly waiting for someone to open the door, thereby pulling out his tooth, (3) The door is opened quickly, but the tooth is in so tightly that Mike is pulled off his stool which goes flying towards the wall. Across the center are pencil sketches of four faces, a woman riding a horse, and a right hand. The first face is of a Black man wearing glasses; his hair and short beard appear to be white. At the lower left, Nast has penciled a mustached pot bellied man wearing a derby and, to his right, the same man lying in a bed with a bandage on his head, flies swarming at his feet. These two drawings are captioned “Before and after Election.” Signed in the lower right corner, in pencil, “Th: Nast.” In fine condition, with a few creases and some scattered light toning and soiling. An impressive collection showcasing Nast’s talents. RRAuction COA.
