Description

Ten days after JFK’s election, Truman weighs in on his hopes for “our new President’s appointments”

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, November 18, 1960. Truman writes former Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder just ten days after JFK was elected. In part: “I think that the appointment of the Governor of North Carolina as Secretary of Commerce [Luther Hodges] is a good one. I sincerely hope that all of our new President’s appointments will be as well qualified and as well received as that one has been. He needs a Secretary of Treasury and a Secretary of Defense worse than any other member of the Cabinet, with the possible inclusion of the Secretary of State. I hope these three key appointments will turn out all right. I have no suggestions to make but I know what I would do if I were there. I am writing to one of the members of my personal Cabinet, if I was President of the United States.” Truman has made a one-word correction in his hand. In fine condition, with a few faint surface impressions and a small paperclip mark at the bottom left corner. Kennedy’s appointments included Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, who would both play important roles in the administration, including the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, where the Cold War almost became a nuclear conflict. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
