Description

Holmes explains his connection with poet Anne Bradstreet

Eminent American writer (1809–1894) best known for his collection The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table and the much-anthologized poem ‘The Chambered Nautilus.’ ALS signed “Oliver Wendell Holmes,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, November 16, 1886. Holmes offers a brief synopsis of his family history. In part: “The statement is quite correct that both Wendell Phillips and myself are (or were) descendants of Ann [sic] Bradstreet. If I remember right, this is the order of succession. [Holmes then provides a ‘family tree’ for the recipient]. I have not made out the genealogy very elegantly.” In fine condition, with central horizontal fold and a couple pencil notations. Phillips was a noted orator, lawyer, and abolitionist. The relationship, albeit distant, between the two was alluded to in Holmes’ 1881 poem entitled ‘Post-Prandial.’ Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
